PITFIRE WORKSHOP
Lead by Mike Taylor and Lin Foust
Saturday, November 22
10am - approx. 7pm
&
Sunday, November 23
10am - 2pm
Pit-fired ceramics is a traditional, primitive wood-fired technique that can be done in your own backyard! In this workshop on Saturday, we will learn how to prepare our pots prior to loading with various surface treatments. We will load our bisqueware into the pit and fire together. We will unload the kiln on Sunday morning and share our discoveries during a potluck lunch to assess our results.
Bring your own lunch. Dinner on Saturday will be provided. We will have a potluck on Sunday!
Breakdown of Dates:
Wednesday, November 12 by 4pm: Drop off work to be bisqued* (if needed).
If you are bisquing your own work, please bring it with you on Saturday, November 22.
Saturday, November 22 at 10am: We will wrap the pots in aluminum foil and sprinkle materials inside for enhanced random effects. We will then load and light the pit. The firing will last around 5 hours. We project to be finished with the firing by 10pm. Lunch and Dinner will be provided.
Sunday, November 23 at 10am: We will unload and share our discoveries over a potluck lunch until 2pm.
*Preparation Note: Terra Sigillata
You may coat your greenware with terra sigillata. Mike recommends applying 3 layers, allowing each to dry completely before the next, and burnishing the final layer with a plastic bag. Once complete, your work can be bisque-fired.
